Eligibility and application notes
Parents may be eligible for 30 hours funded childcare from the term after their child turns 9 months old until they start school, or 15 hours for all 3 and 4-year-olds from the term after their third birthday.
Applications for working parent entitlements must align with term start dates: 30 September, 31 January, or 30 April. If parents start work more than one month after the term begins, entitlement starts the following term.
These dates and schedules ensure that funding allocations are accurate and match the number of children taking up entitlements throughout the year, helping both providers and parents plan childcare effectively.
-
In England, all 3- and 4-year-olds are generally entitled to 15 hours of funded early education per week for 38 weeks a year, regardless of household income.
Your nursery or local authority normally handles the process for claiming these funded hours.
-
If you're studying full-time and receiving Student Finance, you may qualify for a Childcare Grant.
This is separate from the free 15/30-hour nursery schemes. Eligibility depends on things such as your household income, course and children's ages.
-
This isn't free nursery hours, but it can substantially reduce what you pay.
For every £8 you put into a Tax-Free Childcare account, the government adds £2. You can receive up to £2,000 per child per year, or £4,000 for a disabled child.
It can be used for registered nurseries, childminders, nannies, after-school clubs and holiday schemes.
